What Is Text to Speech?

Text to speech (TTS) converts written text into natural-sounding spoken audio. Our browser-based tool uses the Web Speech API built into modern browsers, providing access to dozens of voices in 50+ languages without requiring any downloads or server connections. This is useful for proofreading by listening, creating voice content, language learning, accessibility, and having documents read aloud. All text processing happens locally in your browser — no text is sent to any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download the audio output?

The Web Speech API provides real-time playback but does not natively support audio file export. For recording the speech output, you can use our Screen Recorder tool to capture the audio.

What languages are available?

Available voices depend on your browser and operating system. Most systems include English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and many more.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The Web Speech API processes text locally using voices installed on your device. No text is transmitted anywhere.

Why do voices sound different across browsers?

Each browser and operating system provides its own set of speech synthesis voices. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari each have different voice engines, which is why the same voice selection may sound different.
